Following the widely acclaimed performance of “The Bebop Years, 1945-1949” (June 2011), the Miles Davis Project Band returns to St. James’s Piccadilly, London with a new, unique and authentic programme dedicated to the music and period that cemented Miles Davis in place as a jazz icon.
During this period Miles Davis’s band, later deemed “First Great Quintet”, featured at that time a young and untested John Coltrane on tenor saxophone as a sideman along with a promising rhythm section of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and “Philly” Joe Jones on drums. The output by this quintet was heralded as an outstanding musical success and an amazing comeback following the depths and distraught nature of Miles Davis’s drug addiction during the first half of the decade. This “First Great Quintet” and their music showed Miles Davis not only to have become a first class trumpeter and improviser, but it also established himself as a great evaluator and developer of talent. ...
