Following the widely acclaimed performance of “The Bebop Years, 1945-1949” (June 2011), the Miles Davis Project Band returns to St. James’s Piccadilly, London with a new, unique and authentic programme dedicated to the music and period that cemented Miles Davis in place as a jazz icon.

During this period Miles Davis’s band, later deemed “First Great Quintet”, featured at that time a young and untested John Coltrane on tenor saxophone as a sideman along with a promising rhythm section of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and “Philly” Joe Jones on drums. The output by this quintet was heralded as an outstanding musical success and an amazing comeback following the depths and distraught nature of Miles Davis’s drug addiction during the first half of the decade. In this concert the Miles Davis Project Band recreates the music of this “First Great Quintet” with arrangements completely accurate to recordings and with an unrivalled care for authenticity. An ability that comes only through hand picking musicians passionate about the music and those with knowledge gained from being steeped in the Jazz tradition.

The Miles Davis Project Band was formed in 2007 and is made up of some of the brightest rising stars playing on today’s increasingly vibrant London jazz scene. The band’s boundless energy and mutual enthusiasm for the music of Miles Davis makes it ideal for recreating what was some of the most innovative jazz ever played, and music which so often became key turning points in the history of jazz. The Miles Davis Project Band’s concerts have been featured on “the influential LondonJazz” blog (Quote - Sunday Times, June 2011) and ranked in the Top Music Events in London on Lastminute.com (May & June 11). This clearly promises to be another of London’s must see jazz concerts for 2011.
