In 1957 Sonny Rollins made one of his best loved and most influential records with a trio of tenor sax, bass and drums. This LP, along with Saxophone Colossus, Freedom Suite and A Night at the Village Vanguard established him as one of the most important musicians of his generation.

Tonight’s performance by jazz collective Way Out West develops the music from these records in a new form, with different instrumentations from duo to octet. Way Out West was created in 2004 as a platform for presenting adventurous music from the jazz spectrum, and showcasing musical talent in west London. It has presented more than 600 concerts featuring the most important British based players such as Peter King, Tony Kinsey, Bobby Wellins, Don Weller, Jim Mullen , Tony Kofi, Larry Bartley, Ingrid Laubrock, Nathaniel Facey, Laura Jurd, Liam Noble, Alcyona Mick, as well as some of the very first performances by new stars Tom Smith, Flo Moore, Ralph Wyld, Corrie Dick and Elliot Galvin.
