The whole event takes place in the ballroom of the Holiday Inn whichboasts excellent acoustics and good sight-lines from all the seating which is arranged ‘cabaret style’.
A jazz ‘party’ differs from the more usual ‘festival’ in that it give the audience the opportunity to hear the musicians play in various combinations of differing sizes.
Although much more organised than a series of jam sessions there is a considerable degree of spontaneity and freshness in the playing. The personnel of the groups and themes for the various sets are decided by the musicians themselves and past years have seen sets dedicated to such varied musical areas as the music of Bix Beiderbecke, Thad Jones, Benny Carter, Thelonious Monk, Eddie Condon and Benny Goodman. In many cases the topics for musical discussion are not selected until around a month before and the actual running order not confirmed until a week
before. Like all good jazz the whole event is one of structured improvisation!
The cast of performers is Warren Vache, Enrico Tomasso, Randy Reinhart, Roy Williams, John Allred, Ian Bateman, Alan Barnes, Jim Galloway, Scott Hamilton, Dan Block, Ken Peplowski, Karen Sharp, Scott Robinson, John Bunch, Tardo Hammer, Paolo Alderighi, John Pearce, Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden, Marty Grosz, Frank Tate, Dave Green, Giorgos Antoniou, Nicki Parrott, Joe Ascione, Ed Metz Jr., Steve Brown, Bobby Worth, Annie Ross plus the Norwich Schools Jazz Orchestra.
