The Jazz Bridge First Wednesdays Neighborhood Concerts Series at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts--439 Ashbourne Road in Cheltenham--presents saxophonist Anibal Rojas on Wednesday, February 5. Born in Chile, Rojas came to the United States with his family—fleeing political persecution in Chile --in his early teens. To keep him out of trouble, his parents bought him a saxophone. In a few years, he was good enough to win a full music scholarship from the University of Iowa. Moving to the East Coast, Rojas hooked up with R & B bands and later with the preeminent figures in jazz, Latin and world music, including The New York Horns. The music of Anibal Rojas, who will accompanied on this date by pianist Lucas Brown, bassist Jason Fraticelli, and drummer Joe Truglio, reflects his life experiences, and the music of his country. As a composer, he followed the advice of his colleague, Latin Grammy winner Nestor Torres, who suggested that he write music “that is a reflection of who you are as a person.” This promises to be a unique and very special event. ...
