Jazz returns to Manayunk – after too long an absence – with the Bruce Klauber Jazz Trio, featuring guitarist Frank DiBussolo and bassist Bruce Kaminsky, at a special jazz brunch every Sunday at Café’ Zesty, 4382 Main Street. The brunch runs from noon to 3:00 p.m., there is no cover or music charge, and on-street parking in Manayunk is free on Sundays. Though drummer Bruce Klauber is widely known as one of the most swinging drummers in this region and beyond—a direct descendant of the Gene Krupa / Buddy Rich school of percussion—he became a national name as Krupa’s biographer, with his syndicated newspaper columns, and via his tenure at Warner Brothers, as producer/writer of WB’s “Jazz Legends” DVD series. His popular monthly jazz column, “The Jazz Scene,” is published in the prestigious Broad Street Review. He is the co-founder of our area’s popular All-Star Jazz Trio, a unit that often works in tandem with legendary songstress Peggy King. Peggy and The All-Stars have a CD coming out this fall, which represents Peggy King’s first new recording in 36 years. Whether singing ala Sinatra and Mel Torme’ or drumming, all the groups Klauber has led or co-led have the same goal: To appeal to as wide of an audience as possible, to entertain and to swing....

Grammy Award nominee and virtuoso guitarist Frank DiBussolo has had a long and stellar career as jazz soloist, bandleader, accompanist, recording artist and educator. DiBussolo has worked with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Diana Ross, and has had a number of ground-breaking engagements with jazz guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli. As an educator, he has served on the faculties of Swathmore, Lehigh, and Moravian colleges, and was President of The Combs College of Music. His many critically acclaimed recordings have earned him eight Grammy nominations.
Bassist Bruce Kaminsky is a multi-talented and multi-talented instrumentalist, educator, pioneer of World Music, and is the inventor of the widely-used electric / upright hybrid KYDD bass. As a bassist, he’s played with dozens of pop artists, including swing legends Ray Eberle and Helen O’Connell, as well as famed jazz instrumentals like Tal Farlow. Kaminsky is also one-third of The All-Star Jazz Trio. In the area of World Music, his cutting-edge Klezmer and Middle Eastern ensembles have performed all over the globe. Bruce Kaminsky is currently on the faculty of Drexel University and Montgomery County Community College.
For 22 years, Manayunk’s Café’ Zesty, under the aegis of owner/founder/chef Athanasios “Tom” Konidaris, has been serving some of the finest Greek and Italian cuisine anywhere. Completely redesigned and renovated, but with its famed “open kitchen” still the centerpiece, the Philadelphia Inquirer said of Zesty: “The menu has given new meaning to the words Greco-Roman, offering an extensive selection of Greek, Italian and Mediterranean specialties. Bottom line is that this Italian / Greek combination restaurant is able to put it all together and make a stylish and polished statement. This can be attributed to the talents of Konidaris, a serious food person.” For the Sunday Jazz Brunch, Tom Konidaris promises a delightful, special brunch menu.
Jazz has been off Main Street in Manayunk for way over a decade. And one of the last jazz groups to play there? The Bruce Klauber Jazz Trio, playing at Café’ Zesty, of course.
