Music lovers in Philadelphia’s tri-state area have the unique opportunity to attend a series of concerts by emerging high school jazz musicians who are so serious, talented and technically-advanced, they are on track to become the Benny Golson, Joey DeFrancesco, Stanley Clark, or John Coltrane of the future.
All are students in the Music Education Program of the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts and have been chosen by Berklee College of Music to attend its’ 2012 Five-Week Summer Performance Program. During April, three concerts will be presented from 6:30 to 9pm at the Firehouse in Haddington Multi-Services Building, 5331-41 Haverford Avenue in Philadelphia, 215-472-6737. Tickets are $15.00 each and $10.00 for seniors.
On Friday, April 13, the first concert will feature Antonio Robinson on upright and electric bass, 15, a sophomore, and Jeremy Garcia on alto saxophone, 17, a senior; both are students at Girard Academic Music Program.
Friday, April 20, Yesseh Furaha-Ali, will headline on alto and tenor saxophones. He is 15, and a sophomore at Upper Darby High School.
Two female musicians will perform the last concert on Friday, April 27th. They include Brianna Farr, alto saxophone, 16, who is home schooled in Upper Darby School District and Nzinga Banks, alto saxophone, 18, is home schooled in South New Jersey.
Guest professional musicians will perform with student musicians, and will be announced at each concert. The Clef Club Youth Ensemble rhythm section will accompany.
Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz, founded in 1966, continues to offer a comprehensive music education program for youth and adults. Throughout the years members like, Grover Washington Jr., John Coltrane, and Nina Simone, to name a few, have become some of the greatest artists the world has ever known.
Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts is one of the most highly regarded college jazz programs in the United States. Its alumni include accomplished and successful Jazz musicians like: Branford Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Danilo Perez, and Esperanza Spalding.
