Harold Danko is a proverbial living legend.
He began piano lessons at age 5 and within ten years had chosen jazz for a career, joining Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd after an Army stint. He went on to perform and record with Chet Baker, James Moody, Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Pianist, composer and educator, he has produced over 20 albums on the SteepleChase label as leader. He is now Professor Emeritus of Jazz Studies & Contemporary Media at Eastman School of Music.

Dick Oatts is a reliably thrilling alto master and SteepleChase stablemate. He has played with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Red Rodney, Eddie Gomez, Vic Juris, Bob Brookmeyer, Fred Hersch, Terell Stafford, Jon Faddis, Lalo Schiffrin, Ray Mantilla, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Lester Bowie, Joe Lovano, Sam Jones, Tom Harrell, Paquito D`Rivera, Jim McNeely, Tito Puente, Kenny Wheeler and Gunther Schuller. Oatts has accompanied such vocalists as Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Nnenna Freelon, and Milton Nascimento. He is Professor and Artistic Director of Jazz Studies at Temple’s Boyer College of Music and Dance.
Mike Boone needs no introduction to this audience. He is a mainstay of jazz in Philadelphia, his bass the stalwart foundation for innumerable ensembles, including his own. Stands with his quartet including drummer son Mekhi at Smalls in New York are legendary. He has appeared @exuberance salons with Sumi Tonooka, Uri Caine, Darryl Yokley, John Colianni and Zaccai Curtis. Besides his peripatetic performance schedule, he teaches at Temple’s Boyer College of Music.
Byron Wookie Landham is a Philadelphia native and a first-call drummer. He appeared here in May with John Colianni. He has played with Betty Carter, George Coleman, Bobby Hutcherson, Joey DeFrencesco, Frank Wess, Pat Martino, Cyrus Chestnut, Russell Malone, Ruth Naomi Floyd, Hannibal Lokumbe and the Liberation Orchestra, David Sanborn and Orrin Evans. He performs and records with his saxophonist brother Robert as the Landham Brothers.
Our upcoming presentation is a band united in swing at various tempos and temperatures. It’s a rare opportunity to hear the brilliant Harold Danko in Philadelphia. His colleagues will insist on and support an evening of lyrical beauty, propulsive energy and musical taste.
