JELGAVAS BIG BAND and its 17 talented musicians present a culturally unique program of arranged Latvian traditional music. The ensemble was founded in 1991, right after Latvia gained independence from Soviet Union. The group was formed by a well known Latvian conductor and music director Raitis Ašmanis. Under his leadership, the band became popular and very well known and loved in Latvia by mostly performing music of popular Latvian composers and accompanying Latvian singers and artists in different cultural and musical projects and performances. JBB is also a business card of the city they represent, namely Jelgava city, which is known in Latvia for the high standards of music and education in general.
