John Colianni Trio at @exuberance

John Colianni is yet another Monk Competition pianist to visit @exuberance. John has the distinction of placing in the very first of these back in 1987, competing alongside Marcus Roberts and Joey DeFrancesco.

Working the piano rooms in Baltimore, DC and the Jersey shore in his early years, Colianni landed his first big touring gig with the Lionel Hampton band for three years, followed by four years with Mel Tormé and six with Les Paul. He’s recorded or performed with Larry Coryell, Emily Remler, Joe Wilder, Connie Kay, Lew Tabackin, Mel Lewis, and Nicki Parrott among others. He directs the 17-piece John Colianni Orchestra. John Colianni at Maybeck—part of the famed solo piano series. His most recent CD I Never Knew finds John in a sextet drawn from his big band....

And piano trio will be Mr. Colianni’s format for this salon @exuberance. Joining him for this performance are two stalwarts of Philadelphia jazz.

Mike Boone is the Dean of players in our town and we revere him. He swings reliably and solos brilliantly. Adaptable as a sideman, forceful as a leader, Mike is the quiet, challenging and supportive mentor to successive generations of younger musicians—not the least of whom is his musical prodigy son Mekhi.

Byron Wookie Landham is a Philadelphia native and first-call drummer. He has played with Betty Carter, George Coleman, Bobby Hutcherson, Joey DeFrencesco, Frank Wess, Pat Martino, Cyrus Chestnut, Russell Malone, Ruth Naomi Floyd, Hannibal Lokumbe and the Liberation Orchestra, David Sanborn and Orrin Evans. He performs and records with his saxophonist brother Robert as the Landham Brothers.
