Nite Bjuti (pronounced night beauty) is the US-based, Afro-Caribbean, woman-led improvised experimental trio of vocalist Candice Hoyes (Makaya McCraven, Theaster Gates), Grammy-winning sound chemist Val Jeanty (Kris Davis’ Diatom Ribbons, Terri Lyne Carrington) and bassist Mimi Jones (Beyoncé, Kenny Barron). Together the trio weaves together multiple strands of storytelling using voice, bass, electronic percussion, turntables, Haitian drums, dance and visual projections. Their self-titled debut is a captivating jazz record, honoring the traditions of musical improvisation and while remaining deeply respectful to the subjects and narratives from which it takes inspiration. “Spirit, conjure, necromancy and memory seem to be some of the grounding ideas behind” the stunning, fully improvised Nite Bjuti, according to The New York Times, which should lend an air of ritual and mystery to this performance.
