Check out our featured Artist for May is Linda Ruth Paskell, Adjunct Professor at Arcadia University at her website: http://www.peek-a-view.net/colorofpoverty/ Ms. Paskell will bring her "The Color of Poverty" exhibit. This show is an uplifting look at the beauty of the world and people everywhere. "This specific exhibit is a microcosm of a larger body of work that I have been producing over the last seven years entitled The Color of Poverty. The term is an oxymoron. It juxtaposes two seemingly opposite concepts into one. Here in the States, we don't usually equate poverty with colors that are bright and bold or ever coming close to being inspirational. Yet, after traveling to numerous countries in Central America, South America and Africa, I began to see this repeated theme. While in the midst of some severe poverty in less that comfortable living situations, with limited resources, failing health and some serious injustices shown to them, they were able to joyfully and peacefully produce beauty that came deep from within, and wrap themselves in clothing with colors that were full of life.
The more countries I traveled, the more injustice and human suffering I saw, the more courageous the people became to me in the midst of their stunning suffering.
As an art educator for over thirty years and a single mother of two boys, my interest in the universality of play among children, despite their circumstances, intrigues me as well. This particular grouping of photographs focuses on that very principle as seen in the children of Kenya and Uganda. I do not know their names in most cases, but they are a permanent part of me now. Some are orphans, some are street kids and some are friends. What I do know is that once we OVERCOME THE CULTURAL , RACIAL, RELIGIOUS, SOCIAL, EDUCATIONAL AND GENDER CONSTRUCTS THAT DIVIDE US, we will find that we are all the same dust in the end. It is my desire to represent with integrity, the least fortunate members of society without masking their pain. Please take the time to look into their eyes. You may be surprised at who you see..."
