Vinny Golia (Los Angeles):
Vinny Golia is a composer who fuses the rich heritage of Jazz, contemporary classical and world music into his own unique compositions. As a bandleader, Golia has presented his music to concert audiences in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Japan and the United States in ensembles varying dramatically in size and instrumentation. Mr. Golia has won numerous awards as a composer, including grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, The Lila Wallace Commissioning Program, The California Arts Council, Meet the Composer, Clausen Foundation of the Arts, Funds for U.S. Artists and the American Composers Forum. Vinny Golia (Los Angeles):
Vinny Golia is a composer who fuses the rich heritage of Jazz, contemporary classical and world music into his own unique compositions. As a bandleader, Golia has presented his music to concert audiences in Europe, Canada, Mexico, Japan and the United States in ensembles varying dramatically in size and instrumentation. Mr. Golia has won numerous awards as a composer, including grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, The Lila Wallace Commissioning Program, The California Arts Council, Meet the Composer, Clausen Foundation of the Arts, Funds for U.S. Artists and the American Composers Forum. In 1982 he created the on-going 37 piece Vinny Golia Large Ensemble to perform his compositions for chamber group and jazz orchestra.
A multi-woodwind performer, Vinny's recordings have been consistently picked by critics and readers of music journals for their yearly "ten best" lists. In 1990 he was the winner of the Jazz Times TDWR award for Bass Saxophone. In 1998 he ranked 1st in the Cadence Magazine Writers & Readers Poll and has continually placed in the Downbeat Critic's Poll for Baritone Saxophone. In 1999 Vinny won the LA Weekly’s Award for "Best Jazz Musician". Jazziz Magazine has also named him as one of the 100 people who have influenced the course of Jazz in our Century.
Golia has also contributed original compositions and scores to Ballet and Modern Dance works, video, theatrical productions, and film. As an educator Vinny has lectured on music & painting composition, improvisation, Jazz History, The History of Music in Film, CD & record manufacturing and self-production throughout the United States, Europe and Canada. He currently teaches at California Institute of the Arts. In 1998 Golia was appointed Regent's Lecturer at the University of California at San Diego.
Vinny has been a featured performer with Anthony Braxton, Henry Grimes, John Carter, Bobby Bradford, Joelle Leandre, Leo Smith, Horace Tapscott, John Zorn, Tim Berne, Bertram Turetzky, George Lewis, Barre Phillips, The Rova Saxophone Quartet, Patti Smith, Harry "the Hipster" Gibson, Eugene Chadburne, Kevin Ayers, Peter Kowald, John Bergamo, George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennick, Lydia Lunch, Harry Sparrney and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra amongst many others.
Bhob Rainey (Philadelphia):
Bhob Rainey, a soprano saxophonist and composer, is best known as a solo artist and as one half of Nmperign, with whom he plays alien extended technique effects that are influenced by electronic music, environmental sounds and free improvisation.
Rainey studied at the New England Conservatory of Music with free jazz saxophonist Joe Maneri. Rainey's music during his early- to mid-twenties was, like Maneri's, characterized by long microtonal lines. Rainey's first CD, Ink, featuring Dan DeChellis, was released in 1997. After a controversial 1998 solo concert in Washington D. C. attracted a considerable amount of attention to Rainey's music, he and trumpeter Greg Kelley formed Nmperign with the goal of avoiding linear approaches to form and melodic contour. Nmperign, including Rainey, Kelley and Tatsuya Nakatani, recorded its first CD in 1998. Since 1998, Rainey has recorded extensively, including a number of projects with nmperign (minus Nakatani) and collaborations with musicians and composers like Jason Lescalleet, Le Quan Ninh, Ralf Wehowsky, etc. He continues to pursue a more sound-based (as opposed to note-based) approach in his work with nmperign, whereas his solo work, while far from traditional, often involves the use of more melodic lines. Since 2000, he has also led the bsc, a large ensemble that uses both acoustic instruments and electronics.
Beginning in 2005, Rainey has released a handful of works based around electronics and field recordings, notably his 2006 collaboration with Ralf Wehowsky, I don't think I can see you tonight, and his solo EP, Two Bites of a Bitter Sweet.
Rainey also occasionally appears as a sideman in more traditional settings, most recently in recurring work with ex-Galaxie 500 indie rock duo Damon & Naomi, for whom he has also done horn and string arrangements.
Heath Watts (Philadelphia):
Heath Watts calls his method of playing and composition NODOT (Non-Objective Dynamically Ordered Tones). The music is 'Non-Objective' because, like visual artist W. Kandinsky, Watts believes that art, including music, does not have to represent anything tangible in the real world. When Watts improvises, he focuses on pure sound and how tones fit together, resulting in 'Dynamically Ordered Tones'. - Jazz Loft
