He’s earned two Juno Awards, multiple nominations, and composed music for Stephen Petronio’s BLOOM. A celebrated figure in classical music, he premiered his first opera Prima Donna in 2009 and his second, Hadrian, in 2018. He has performed orchestrated pop and classical works with leading opera singers and major symphonies, and composed the orchestral song cycle Five Shakespeare Sonnets for the San Francisco Symphony.Wainwright’s achievements include the 2012 premiere of Sing Me the Songs That Say I Love You, a documentary and concert tribute to his mother, Kate McGarrigle. An accompanying album features performances by Rufus, Martha, Anna McGarrigle, Emmylou Harris, Richard and Linda Thompson, and others. He continues to raise funds for the Kate McGarrigle Fund for Sarcoma Research. He recorded Prima Donna: The Album with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and created Prima Donna: A Symphonic Visual Concert, staged internationally from 2015–16.Rufus marked Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary with Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets (2016), featuring Martha Wainwright, Florence Welch, Anna Prohaska, Marius de Vries, Helena Bonham Carter, Carrie Fisher, William Shatner, Inge Keller, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In 2018 he launched the worldwide All These Poses tour and premiered his opera Hadrian, later revived in 2022 in a Mapplethorpe‑inspired production. During the pandemic he created the 18‑episode livestream series A Rufus‑Retro‑Wainwright‑Spective. His 2020 album Unfollow the Rules earned GRAMMY and Juno nominations and he won the Hollywood Music in Media Award for “Secret Sister.” In 2023 he released GRAMMY‑nominated Folkocracy and toured symphonic shows of Want One and Want Two with major orchestras worldwide.
