Bert frequently performs on the world beat, blues, and jazz circuit. He has long been known for holding down the bottom in Philadelphia’s New Orleans funk, blues, and reggae dance band, Philly Gumbo. When not working with Philly Gumbo or the Mélange Jazz Collective, he can be heard with Project Bop (straight ahead jazz), Bill Davis (Spirit of the Flute), the Philadelphia Skajazz Quartet (Jamaican jazz and boogaloo), Reggae Thunder, Gumbo Social Club (traditional New Orleans jazz and world beat) and the free jazz trio Eye2Eye with Elliott Levin and Kimpedro. Bert leads the Willow Trio, which blends world beat rhythms with acoustic and electric jazz as well as performing in the ska band RK$TDY (Rocksteady)....

Bert has also performed with musicians in the Sun-Ra Arkestra, the Jamaican super star reggae band (Mighty Diamonds), South African Sharon Katz, Brazilian native Xande Cruz, Sao Paulo songstress Anni Somi. Notable jazz performances have been with Byard Lancaster, Harold E. Smith, Robert Kenyatta’s Afro-Jazz group La Tumba, Bobby Watson, Khan Jamal, Elliot Levin, jazz diva Jeannie Brooks and Zanzibar Blue regular Brenda Smith. Bert has recorded two cds with the legendary saxophonist Byard Lancaster.
Bert has been the bassist and musical director for two Philadelphia Jazz Projects celebrating the contributions of Sun Ra Satellites Are Spinning. Bert’s composition, “Sunday Sermon on Mars, Homage to Sun Ra” will be published in the Real Philadelphia Book as will “Blues for Trayvon.” Bert studied jazz bass with Al Stauffer and Buster Williams.
