Hosted by the Philadelphia Jazz Legacy Project and the 8th in an online series focusing on the many aspects of jazz in Philadelphia, past and present. This discussion explores the life and music of trumpeter Lee Morgan with biographer Tom Perchard who wrote Lee Morgan: His Life, Music and Culture and trumpeter Duane Eubanks, Philly's homegrown jazz star from the famous Eubanks family.
Lee Morgan, a musical prodigy, was recruited to Dizzy Gillespie's big band while still a teenager. He then joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, so by his early-20s Morgan had played on four continents and recorded dozens of albums. Morgan developed a personal and highly influential style that sold huge amounts of albums, rare for jazz. The black arts and people's movement of the late-60s gave Morgan a new, political impulse, and he became a avid campaigner for black musicians' rights and representation....
