The Jazz Bridge “Jazz at the Sanctuary” Second Wednesdays Concert Series in Center City presents vocalist Ruth Naomi Floyd at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion--2110 Chestnut Street--on Wednesday, March 11. Vocalist Ruth Naomi Floyd, daughter of urban missionaries and born and raised in Philadelphia, embraced the Christian faith and its immense body of music as a child. She began to develop and share her musical talents as a youngster by singing in church choirs and studying piano, flute and bassoon. This gifted vocalist/composer has been at forefront of creating vocal jazz settings that express Christian theology for over 13 years. As a leader, she has released several highly acclaimed recordings. Blessed with a soaring mezzo-soprano voice, critics have praised her music for seamlessly combining ensemble-based modern jazz with explicit Biblical messages of unwavering faith in God. Floyd has recorded and/or performed with notables such as James Newton, Jay Hoggard, Terri Lyne Carrington, Uri Caine, Charles Frambrough and Bobby Zankel. She is also active as an educator, teaching at the Spruce Hill Christian School, and as an Adjunct Professor at the Biblical University of Langhorne, PA....
