"Without Tony Allen, There Would be no AfroBeat" - Fela Kuti
✦Tony Allen✦ is one of the greatest drummers on the planet and the man who created Afrobeat alongside Fela Kuti. Twenty-four years after leaving Fela’s band he remains a restless and potent trail blazer for new African musical adventures and an inspiration to musicians around the world.
"Fela said I sounded like four drummers," says Allen. If so, it could have been because, in his mature Afrika 70 style, he was drawing on four different styles - highlife, soul/funk, jazz and traditional African drumming. A unique and mighty sound. Continuing to work with top musicians to fuse afrobeat with funk, rock and hip-hop, Tony remains a vital force. Recent releases, such as Secret Agent continue to breathe new life into a legendary career and in 2010 Tony performed at WOMAD as he celebrated his 70th birthday.
Tony Allen's keyboard player for this one-time Canadian date, Detroit-based ✦Amp Fiddle✦r is a celebrated soul/funk/electronica musician, singer, songwriter and producer. He is probably best known as part of George Clinton’s Parliament and Funkadelic groups from 1985 until 1996, Fiddler has also worked with Moodymann, Stephanie McKay, Jamiroquai, Prince, Was (Not Was), the Brand New Heavies, Fishbone, Corinne Bailey Rae and nu soul artistMaxwell. http://www.myspace.com/ampfiddler
Weird and wonderful, ✦Prince Enoki's Insect Orchestra✦ channels nomadic grooves inspired by jungle journeys and worldwide wonders. Inspired by Afrobeat, overtone singing and many other styles, leader Scott Peterson has travelled to the Republic of Tuva in Siberia to study with master throat singer Sergei Ondar, as well as graduating with a jazz degree and studying bass with John Patitucci.

Their after party set will cover a wide spectrum of music, incorporating a soulful mixture of Soul, Jazz, Latin, Brazilian, Disco, Garage and House. http://www.myspace.com/unitedsoulevents
