Individually and collectively, the members of Thoth Trio have been at the center of the Pittsburgh creative music scene for several decades. Described as "intense acoustic jazz," Thoth Trio brings both an intimacy and energy to their performances. While the focus of the group has always been its original compositions, past performances have also been devoted to the music of Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and Ornette Coleman.

Paul Thompson and David Throckmorton were previously the rhythm section for the Maynard Ferguson Big Band, and collaborated on the improvised hip-hop drum and bass group BEAM. Paul is currently faculty at Duquesne University, West Virginia University and CAPA High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, and has a highly successful Youtube channel devoted to bass topics. Ben Opie is faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, and has recorded with Anthony Braxton. He is the recipient of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Creative Achievement Award, and The Pittsburgh Foundation Creative Development Grant. All three are highly active playing in various groups both regionally and nationally.
