In 2001, Madsen started to live between New York and Vorarlberg, Austria, where he met David Helbock, a youngster already showing exceptional talent on the piano despite being only 16. Madsen became Helbock’s teacher, mentor and friend.

Over the years, the classically trained Austrian David Helbock has become a widely recognised and hugely interesting pianist and composer. With scores of awards as a pianist to his name, he has released more than 20 albums as frontman.

Austrian Syndicate is an exciting new project once again spawned in the depths of Helbock’s heart. The group features close friends Madsen and Helbock, alongside three young Austrian Jazz musicians: Raphael Preuschl and Herbert Pirker, for the last 20 years Vienna’s most highly sought-after bass and drums duo, and Claudio Spieler, a percussionist who studied in his young days under the Afghan master Hakim Ludin.

The band will record its first album in early 2023 and release it at ACT Music mid-year. This is the work they’ll present to us in the Plaza de la Trinidad at a concert where all 5 excellent musicians will set about filling the night with keyboards, synthesizers, rhythm and percussion.
