Pianist Amaro Freitas’s journey from local acclaim in Recife in Brazil’s North-East to a major international profile has been rapid. Freitas’s third album “Sankofa” (2021, on London-based Far Out Recordings) is a spiritual quest into the forgotten stories, ancient philosophies and inspirational figures of Black Brazil, and is his most stunning and sincere work to date.
