With his Aurora Octet, founded in 2016, Carl Christian Wittig has found an ensemble that moves freely both in jazz and in the classical tradition. In one composition, the ensemble shows how fresh the mixture of string quartet and jazz quartet can sound.
Carl Christian Wittig has been interested in both classical music and improvisation from the very beginning of his musical career. Even before he began studying jazz and classical double bass at the HMT Leipzig, he won the Deutschlandfunk studio prize at Jugend Jazzt with his band moment`s concept. He transferred to the HSLU Lucerne for a semester to study composition with Ed Partyka and Nils Wogram. Shortly afterwards, he became a member of the Bundesjazzorchester under the direction of Prof. Jiggs Whigham and Prof. Niels Klein.

His interest in composition necessarily leads him to form a larger ensemble: „I want to make music that combines many different timbres and structures, and working with a larger ensemble really appealed to me. My own feeling is that the focus should be on the concept and on compositions that coherently combine and merge strings and quartet. Combining a string quartet and a jazz quartet is also very autobiographically influenced. These are two poles in which I feel totally at home.“

When founding the ensemble, Carl Christian Wittig drew on the numerous contacts he had made during his time in the Bundesjazzorchester and during his studies and quickly found congenial partners. The ensemble’s great interplay was recognized in 2019 (postponed to 2022 due to coronavirus) with a nomination for the final of the 12th European Jazz Prize at the Burghausen Jazz Festival.

„During my studies at the HMT Leipzig, I found that classical musicians rarely come into contact with improvisation, even though they are very interested in it. I wanted to work with them to find out how improvisation can be integrated into their playing.“
