This year our early jazz concert by Keith Nichols and the Academy Big Band will be a tribute to the music of New York's Harlem and its greatest venue: The Cotton Club. From the mid-1920s onwards, followers of fashion flocked uptown to the many clubs and dance-halls, fuelled by the popularity of jazz pioneers Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller and many others. The Big Band begin their programme with a panorama of rare orchestrations of Harlem-based bands and a musical look at the Cotton Club, its orchestras, artistes and speciality acts.
