TRIBUTE TO BRUBECK CONCERT SAT., September 28, 2013 - Grace Milliman Pollock Performing Arts Center - 340 North 21st Street, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
CPFJ proudly announces a special concert in tribute to the memory of one of America's jazz icons - Dave Brubeck. The pianist and composer who helped make jazz popular again in the 1950s and ’60s with recordings like “Time Out,” the first jazz album to sell a million copies, and “Take Five,” the still instantly recognizable hit single that was that album’s centerpiece, died in December, 2012, one day before his 92nd birthday. In his long career he became best known for his famous Quartet that featured drummer Joe Morello, bassist Eugene Wright, and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond.
CPFJ is thrilled to have our featured performer Cyrus Chestnut arranging a full evening of Brubeck's music for his Trio and guest alto saxophonist Sharel Cassity. Bassist Eric Wheeler and drummer Evan Sherman round out this stellar group.
Video segments of the original Brubeck Quartet from rare European performances will also be shown.
Cyrus began his musical career at the age of six, playing in church in Baltimore, MD. While in Maryland he studied at the Peabody Conservatory and later went to Boston to get his degree in Composition from Berklee College of Music. He has since been a major force on the international jazz scene having toured and performed with a wide range or artists including Bette Midler, Freddie Hubbard, Chick Corea, Isaac Hayes, Dizzy Gillespie, Betty Carter & opera star Kathleen Battle. He has been a frequent performer for CPFJ and was an educator/artist at our 2012 & 2013 Jazz camps.
Saxophonist/flutist Sharel Cassity, an Oklahoma native, made the transition to New York city with a full scholarship to Julliard in 2005 - she graduated with her MA in Jazz Studies. She has been featured in the big bands of Jimmy Heath, Roy Hargrove & the DIVA Big Band and smaller jazz groups led by Wycliffe Gordon and Ingrid Jensen. Sharel appeared in the Downbeat Magazine's Critics' Poll category for "Rising Star, Alto Saxophone" during 2010 & 2011 and her first CD as a leader, "Relentless" (Jazz Legacy Productions) received a four star review in Downbeat. Recently, Sharel has had the honor of being inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and is working on her second release with Jazz Legacy Productions.
Tom Weik, a long time CPFJ Corporate Member, suggested having this event and is underwriting the concert in memory of his father, Wilbur Z. Weik, who introduced Tom to jazz when he was a boy.
We will host a V.I.P. Meet the Artist reception following the concert(concert + reception tickets are $40) - tickets of all categories (adult - $20; member $18; Student $10) are available from our web site - www.friendsofjazz.org or by phone 717-540-1010.
