Dave Kikoski has played on over 100 records including 19 under his own name. He has toured and recorded with Roy Haynes, Randy Brecker, Bob Berg and Billy Hart. He won a 2011 Grammy Award with the Mingus Big Band for “Live at the Jazz Standard,” and landed a Grammy nomination with Roy Haynes for the “Birds of a Feather" CD. His first trio album as leader featured Eddie Gomez and Al Foster. Subsequent albums feature the likes of Seamus Blake, Alex Sipiagin, Boris Kozlov, Donald Edwards, Billy Hart, Essiet Essiet, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Scott Colley, John Patitucci and Christian McBride. Ugonna Okegwo is a first-call bassist for the greatest practitioners of this music. Since hitting New York in 1989, he’s worked with Big Nick Nicholas, Junior Cook, James Spaulding, Jon Hendricks, Jacky Terrasson and drummer Leon Parker, various Tom Harrell ensembles, the Mingus Big Band, Kenny Barron, Michael Brecker, Benny Carter, Johnny Griffin, Wynton Marsalis, James Moody, Clark Terry, Pharoah Sanders, Steve Wilson, Michael Wolff, Bruce Barth, Steve Davis, Lionel Hampton, Kurt Rosenwinkel and others.
As leader, Sylvia Cuenca brought Dave Kikoski and Essiet Essiet to @exuberance in 2018. We are thrilled that Dave is returning the favor for this salon. A touring veteran with Joe Henderson, Clark Terry and Eddie Henderson, Sylvia has swung with a raft of masters—Al Grey, Jimmy Heath, Frank Wess, Marian McPartland, Joe Williams, Billy Taylor, Kenny Barron, Michael Brecker, Hilton Ruiz, Gary Bartz, Dianne Reeves and Dianne Schuur among them.
Sylvia memorably joined Tootie Heath, Louis Hayes and Joe Saylor at Dizzy’s in 2015 for “The Whole Drum Truth,” a breathtakingly musical conference of rhythm masters. Riel Lazarus commends Cuenca’s “mix of power and restraint…providing energetic yet unobtrusive color from start to finish.”
