On Friday, November 14, the nine-time Grammy nominee and multi-faceted artist Nnenna Freelon lends her voice and grace to the second concert in the new Jazz at All Saints’ Concert Series.

Long esteemed in jazz circles as a vocalist, composer, and arranger, Nnenna has channeled personal loss into new outlets for her creativity. Her latest album, Beneath the Skin, and debut book, Beneath the Skin of Sorrow: Improvisations on Love, are love letters of loss, honoring both her late sister and her late husband, the renowned architect Phil Freelon, who is best known as the lead designer of the Smithsonian’s Museum of African American Culture and History and Atlanta’s National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

Neenna has ranked in the Top 20 on the Jazz Week Charts all summer long, a testament to the power of Beneath the Skin. In her storied career, she has performed with such legends as Ray Charles, Al Jarreau, George Benson, Ramsey Lewis, Benny Golson, and Ellis Marsalis. She has produced an original play and starred in both a Langston Hughes production at the Apollo Theater and a Hollywood Bowl Concert with Jessye Norman. Nominated twice for the Soul Train “Lady of Soul” award, she also has been honored with the Billie Holiday Award from the Academie du Jazz and the Eubie Blake Award from the Cultural Crossroads Center in New York.

Singing, writing, and producing are just some of Nnenna’s investments in the jazz genre. Dedicated to educating young people, she has toured the country as the national spokesperson for Partners in Education. Her song “One Child at a Time,” has become an anthem for numerous organizations, including United Way.

The November 14th Jazz at All Saints’ Concert takes place in the sanctuary of All Saints’ Episcopal Church beginning at 7:00 p.m. It will be followed by a Q&A with Jazz at All Saints’ Artistic Director Virginia Schenck and a reception in the Parish House.
