There’s no long-standing tradition of a free-jazz trio with accordion, bass and drums — yet OBSiDiAN makes it feel as if there were, building on that imagined tradition with great respect and an infectious joy for collective music-making. Energetic, groovy passages are woven with deep, meditative soundscapes created from Vojta Drnek’s unique, quirky prepared-accordion sounds, Jan Leipnitz’s gentle-yet-explosive drumming, and the vast expressive range of Isabel Rößler’s bass. On this evening, Tobias Delius’s rousing, chirping and at the same time roaring tenor saxophone and clarinet enrich the trio into a quartet.
