I Called Him Morgan at Ritz At The Bourse

There will be four screenings daily during the April 7 - 13, 2017 run of the Lee Morgan jazz documentary film "I Called Him Morgan" at the Landmark Ritz Bourse Theater, 400 Ranstead St. on Fourth St. between Market & Chestnut in the Old City district of Philadelphia, PA. Daily screenings are at 1:20 pm, 4:20 pm, 7:15 pm, and 9:45 pm. The film has a running time of one hour and 32 minutes.

On Saturday April 8 following the conclusion of the 7:15 screening, there will be a Q&A about the film and Lee Morgan with the following participants:

J. Michael Harrison - on air host at Philly jazz radio station WRTI-FM, whose "The Bridge" radio show covers the the Philly bebop sound that Lee Morgan helped make famous. J. Michael's jazz and Lee Morgan knowledge will be a valuable asset as he moderates the Q&A....

Fred Adams, trumpeter and leader of the Philadelphia Heritage Art Ensemble and Lee Morgan expert through his writing arrangements of Lee Morgan compositions for his band and with his studies of Lee Morgan and other Philly bebop musicians of the 1950s and 1960s that are represented in the music of his band.

Odean Pope, internationally acclaimed jazz tenor saxophone musician and bandleader who performed with and knew Lee Morgan.

Film Synopsis:

On a snowy night in February 1972, legendary jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan was shot dead by his common-law wife, Helen, during a gig at a club in New York City. The murder sent shockwaves through the jazz community, and the memory of the event still haunts the people who knew the Morgans. Helen served time for the crime and, following her release, retreated into obscurity. Over 20 years later, a chance encounter led her to give a remarkable interview. Helen’s revealing audio “testimony" acts as a refrain throughout the film, which draws together a wealth of archival photographs and footage, interviews with friends and bandmates and incredible jazz music to tell the ill-fated pair’s story. Part true-crime tale, part love story, and an all-out musical treat, I Called Him Morgan is a chronicle of the dramatic destinies of two unique personalities and the music that brought them together. Directed by Swedish filmmaker Kasper Collin, the film also features cinematography by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young (Arrival, Selma). Kasper Collin also directed the Albert Ayler jazz documentary film titled My Name Is Albert Ayler.
