Born into a musical family, Matt Galletti has been drawn to music his entire life. His father, also a drummer, played drums and owned a recording studio in the Philadelphia area in the 70’s along with his brother, who was a guitar player.
Matt grew up in Upper Darby, PA, listening to music by The Beatles, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Toto and various other bands and styles, while learning the fundamentals of drums and music in school. When Matt got to high school, he found himself enamored with the marching band, jazz ensemble, indoor drumline, orchestra, band and choir. His instructors mostly had a strong percussion background, which proved extremely beneficial in shaping who he would be as a drummer.
After high school, Matt studied at University of North Texas for a year, and in 2001, moved back to the Philadelphia area and began studying at Temple University. It was there that a strong bond was made with some great Philadelphia musicians that still exist today. His mentor and now friend, Erik Johnson, played a vital role in his growth as a musician. Matt graduated in 2005 with a degree in Jazz Performance.
Since graduating, Matt has played a variety of styles of music for different bands and recordings. Lately, Matt has been teaching at the Mattock School of Music, teaching privately at his own house, recording at his home studio, playing in a wedding band, playing as a sideman for various jazz ground and leading his own trio-“It’s Happening- The Matt Galletti Trio”, featuring Elliot Bild on a Trumpet and Dave Mattock on Organ. He has also been mentored since 2016 under the great master drummer, Michael Carvin.
Jazz Bridge, an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to assisting Greater Philadelphia Metro area jazz and blues musicians and vocalists in times of crisis, sponsors these neighborhood concerts throughout the region to keep the sound of Philadelphia alive.
