„In June 2023, after I broke my arm in a sports accident and was temporarily unable to play drums, I started writing the compositions for my new project Leif Berger Quartet.
The idea of using a music notation programme – which was new territory for me at the time – came from the need to write more complex pieces that exceeded my skills on the piano (my previous main tool for composing). My vision was to create electro-acoustic music that combined elements of modern jazz, avant-garde/free improvisation, late romanticism and indie (from a harmonic point of view).
In addition, my ambition was to create music that was much more complex on a rhythmic level than my previous compositions, which are often rather simple in this respect.
Over the last five years I have started to develop a musical language based on polyrhythms and unusual subdivisions in my work with various bands (Percussion, Neon Dilemma, Felix Henkelhausen Quintett, consistency of destruction), which I now wanted to incorporate more intensively into my own compositions for the first time. It was, however, an urgent concern of mine that the complexity should never creep in as an end in itself and stand in the way of the emotionality and depth of the music, but on the contrary should actually be conducive to it and formulate it even further.
An intensive composition phase of ten days resulted in ten pieces, which I then began to work on with the final instrumentation. The musicians are Felix Hauptmann on piano and keyboard (the keyboard Felix plays is my Yamaha SPR-36, a beginner’s keyboard from the 80s that I’ve recorded many of my solo albums on), Jannis Sicker on nylon acoustic guitar, David Helm on electric bass and myself on drums. With these three musicians, after much deliberation, I found the perfect blend of Felix’s layered sounds and rhythmic precision, David’s improvisational daring and deep groove and Jannis‘ lyrical, romantic melodies.“
