Shamika Byrd - Sacred and Soulful: a Journey at 7 X 7 Venice Island Concert Series at Venice Island Performing Arts And Recreation Center

Songress and actress, Shamika Byrd will take the audience on a musical journey with sacred and soulful sounds reminiscent of the African-American Diaspora. This Philadelphia native fell in love with traditional gospel music as a child while attending Temple Baptist Church in Chester, PA. Influenced by several gospel legends, Byrd explored many church denominations, but was reignited with the performance of Negro spirituals during her two European tours. It was then that she began to understand how her religious musical education along with the classical principals learned at Eastern University were bridged together by the genre of Jazz. Byrd will be accompanied by several vocalists, a keyboardist, drummer, bassist, percussionist and a few  string/wind instrumentalists. The Philadelphia Jazz Project in collaboration with independent producers and artists will present the “7x7 @ Venice Island,” concert series at the Venice Island Performing Arts & Recreation Center.

The goal of the Philadelphia Jazz Project is to inspire a network to support, promote, archive and celebrate the diverse elements within the Philadelphia Jazz community, with the larger goal of connecting to the global scene.
