About
One of the UK's leading jazz musicians the award-winning saxophonist Tim Garland has, over the last 25 years, garnered a formidable international reputation as not only a jazz improviser of fluency, power and grace but also as a composer and arranger of remarkable clarity and breadth. Tim formed his first group, the jazz/folk group Lammas, in 1990, however, it was in the late 90's when he received a call from the iconic US pianist Chick Corea to join his band, an association that lasts to this day, that Tim really cemented his reputation as a world-class performer. As well as a player Tim's writing and band-leading also became an important force, with groups such as the Dean Street Underground Orchestra, Storms/Nocturnes, Acoustic Triangle and his award winning Lighthouse Project. As well as work with Chick and his own projects he also spent over 4 years with Bill Brufordโs Earthworks as both composer and performer. Voted "Musician of the Year" in the 2006 Parliamentary Jazz Awards it wasn't just Tim's playing that was by then drawing attention, as a composer he was also starting to get significant work, including commissions from the likes of the LSO, BBC Concert Orchestra and The Royal Northern Sinfonia. In 2009 he won a Grammy for his part in creating Chick Corea's "The New Crystal Silence" and for almost 10 years he was composer-in-residence at Newcastle Universityโs International Centre for Music Studies. Tonight Tim will be bringing his newest line up to the Club, his "Electric Quartet", the complete band line up being: Tim on sax, the great Jason Rebello (Sting, Jeff Beck) keyboards, Ant Law (Jason Rebello) on 8 string guitar (yes, that's 8!) and Asaf Sirkis (Lighthouse, Gilad Atzmon) on drums. Tim has described the style and approach of this band as "โฆa new chapter for this all-star band, with the electric element giving the material shades of my early influences such as Chick, Bill Bruford and Weather Report. A unique line up where the bass is covered ingeniously by Jason on keyboards or guitarist Ant Law's unusual eight string guitar. A sophisticated and exciting new set of pieces being given a first live hearing!" The 606 Club is pleased to present the inaugural gig by this exciting world-class band....
