Victor Gelling, no stranger to the Cologne improvisation and jazz scene, invites you to a special kind of field experiment this evening: With the help of a research grant from the city of Cologne, it was possible to design a completely new instrument based on the microtonal instruments of the American composer Harry Partch. The Electric Surrogate Kithara, an electrified version of Partch’s 14-string instrument, is the centerpiece of the evening. With the help of Cologne stringed instrument maker Stefan Bosch, an instrument was created over months of work in which Victor installed several microcontrollers and other electrical gadgets entirely in the spirit of his own sound world in order to combine Harry Partch’s microtonal approaches with modern improvisational worlds....
