Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present the return of the Tom Rainey Trio, led by the in-demand drummer and featuring two of the leading voices in modern jazz, guitarist Mary Halvorson and saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock.
Originally from California, Rainey has played with most of the heavyweights of the contemporary jazz scene since moving to New York, including Mark Helias, Kris Davis, Tim Berne and Tony Malaby. For his own trio – based on the concept of equality – he has chosen two strong female musicians: Ingrid Laubrock is a saxophonist who plays with an extraordinary sensitivity for structure and form, fusing intellect and poetry in her refined improvisations, while Mary Halvorson is one of the most sought after jazz guitarists of her generation. Rainey’s voluminous recording credits and the artistic caliber of the musicians he’s supported would easily place him on the A-list of drummers closely identified with the New York City modern creative jazz scene roughly from the late ’80s onward. For nearly four decades he’s performed at festivals and clubs throughout North America and Europe with a wide range of artists, including John Abercrombie, Ray Anderson, Tim Berne, Jane Ira Bloom, Ted Curson, Marc Ducret, George Gruntz, David Torn, Mark Helias, Fred Hersch, Andy Laster, Joe Lovano, Carmen McRae, Mike Nock, Simon Nabatov, New and Used, Matthias Schubert, Tom Varner, WDR Big Band, Ken Werner and Denny Zeitlin. He made his long-awaited debut as a leader with his trio on Pool School in 2010, and has continued honing the band’s sound since, as evidenced by their follow-up releases, Camino Cielo Echo (2012) and the live Hotel Grief in 2015. On 2014’s Obbligato he led a quintet featuring Laubrock, Ralph Alessi on trumpet, Kris Davis on piano and Drew Gress on bass.
Originally from Germany, Ingrid Laubrock relocated to London to begin studies with ex-Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint before moving to Brooklyn in 2008. Her current ensembles include Sleepthief with Tom Rainey and pianist Liam Noble, a two-piano nonet Nein, the Ingrid Laubrock Quintet and the collaboration Haste with Veryan Weston and Hannah Marshall, in addition to new New York-based trios, with Tyshawn Sorey and Kris Davis, and with Mary Halvorson and Tom Rainey. She has performed with Tim Berne, Evan Parker, Steve Beresford, John Edwards, Norma Winstone, Django Bates' Human Chain, and many other exceptional improvisers.
Mary Halvorson is a guitarist, composer and improviser living in Brooklyn. Since 2000 she has been performing regularly in New York with numerous groups and has toured Europe and the U.S. with Anthony Braxton and Trevor Dunn's Trio-Convulsant. Additionally, Halvorson has performed alongside and interpreted the music of Joe Morris, Nels Cline, John Tchicai, Taylor Ho Bynum, Matana Roberts, Tony Malaby, Elliott Sharp, Myra Melford, Andrea Parkins, Tyshawn Sorey, Marc Ribot and Jason Moran. Current projects which Mary composes for and performs with include The Mary Halvorson Trio with John Hebert and Ches Smith, a chamber-music duo with violist Jessica Pavone, and the avant-rock band People.
