Pianist Sylvie Courvoisier, who comes from Lausanne and has lived in Brooklyn for years, combines different worlds in her playing with Mark Feldman or Mary Halverson, with musicians such as Joëlle Léandre or Wadada Leo Smith: the detailed chamber music of her European roots and the experimental sounds of the jazz scene in New York.
Her new solo album To Be Other-Wise shows the pianist at the height of her abilities. She is as playful as she is intense, as rooted in the jazz tradition as she is searching and adventurous. Sylvie Courvoisier is deeply connected to the music of jazz pioneer Irène Schweizer. One of Irène Schweizer’s last concerts was a piano duo with Sylvie Courvoisier at the unerhört! festival in 2018. Pour Irène Schweizer is the title of Courvoisier’s solo program in Cologne – two days after a solo guest performance at the jazz festival in Irène’s hometown of Schaffhausen

Saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock – who emigrated from Germany to Brooklyn via London – has released more than 20 albums on Intakt Records. In Cologne, she presents a trio of the highest quality. Ingrid Laubrock’s duo with drummer Tom Rainey will be joined by bassist Brandon López. Not just a simple extension of the Laubrock-Rainey duo plus one. The young bassist (born in 1988), who has already worked with Dave Liebman, Zeena Parkins and John Zorn, creates a different dynamic. A new balance is created in the three-piece constellation and a different interplay of forces emerges.
