Growing up in Denver, Colorado, trumpeter Kenny Warren was influenced early on by local greats such as Ron Miles, Al Hood and Greg Gisbert. In 2002, he moved to New York to study jazz at SUNY Purchase, where he met longtime musical companions such as Bobby Avey and JP Schlegelmilch.
Since graduating in 2006, he has been active in the Brooklyn improv scene, playing with many renowned musicians including Tony Malaby, Chris Speed, Angelica Sanchez, Stephan Crump and Brad Shepik. Through his long-standing membership of the brass band Slavic Soul Party, Warren expanded his melodic approach to include elements of Roma music and Arabic maqam traditions. As a versatile composer, he has released his own works with the avant-folk project Laila and Smitty and with formations such as ZhirtZ n ZkinZ and the Sandra Weiss Quintet.
In 2017, his critically acclaimed jazz album Thank You For Coming to Life was released on the British label Whirlwind Recordings, followed by further releases such as the solo cassette YLA (2018), the trio album In The Heat (2020) and the solo trumpet album Forehead during the pandemic.
Warren is currently active with two new projects: the trio Sweet World with Christopher Hoffman and Nathan Ellman-Bell, and a duo with pianist Bobby Avey – both with album releases in 2023, with Sweet World appearing on Out of Your Head Records in May 2024.
