„You have to learn to be laconic. And you shouldn’t confuse it with irony. Both are arts of allusion, but one keeps a deep seriousness inside while the other moves away. Julian Bossert, Henning Gailing and Dominik Raab feel connected to the latently laconic attitude of cheerful earnestness and enjoy the variety of contrasts that can be developed from it. This does not require the usual mechanisms of jazz recognition, which dock on to practiced patterns of complexity, expressiveness or crossing boundaries. Rather, the musicians cultivate the dynamic withdrawal, the restriction to basic patterns such as broom and cymbal play, walking bass phrasing or the velvet blown approach, which then develop their strength in the detailed work. They forego the security of the harmonic and play with the openness of the hints that result from it. And they concentrate on pointed swing, on the groove in the subtle, above all on the interaction of the characters, which give the music the appearance of the organic and at the same time retain enough integrity to not appear clichéd. Again the laconic helps to give the music an aura of presence. You can hear the smile, but also the clarity, the desire, the goal. Dead Beat, Bad Deed – and maybe there is a grain of irony involved.
