A concert hall without a grand piano? Not an option for LOFT founder Hans Martin Müller, and it was not until the purchase of a Steinway A grand piano in September 1989 that concerts were played on a regular basis at the LOFT, more than 30 years ago. In 1993 the A-grand was even replaced by a Steinway-D grand, and countless piano recordings have since been recorded on this instrument by the LOFTs recording studio.
Both, concerts and studio recordings, are now on hold, especially the free musicians, but also we at the LOFT, suffer from the Corona Virus-related ban of events. By live-streaming solo concerts from the LOFT, we - like so many others now - make some musicians audible and visible....

We are very pleased that Hans Lüdemann will be a guest on Saturday April 4th at 8:30 p.m. with a piano solo as part of the livestream series.


Lüdemann's development as a solo pianist is closely linked to the LOFT. His first solo CD the natural piano was recorded there live in 1994. The duo CD with Paul Bley, released a year earlier, is now legendary. Solo tours have since led Lüdemann to Africa, North America and China in 2018, as well as to various festivals, most recently the Elbjazz Festival Hamburg 2019. His latest, fourth solo album "das reale klavier", released in 2015 by BMC records, is a live recording from the LOFT.
The acoustic piano sounds were expanded with sampled piano sounds in order to get into microtonal quarter-tone worlds "between the keys". Since then, Lüdemann has continued to pursue this approach, also on the latest CD in the mikroPULS quartet.
The Arabesque, commissioned by Steinway in 2013, and a new version of the association recorded online for ZEIT in November 2019 are among the special tastes of solo piano playing.
The concert streamed from the LOFT will be a double premiere: in terms of its form and with a series of new compositions and improvisations. Whether this will be purely acoustic or electronically alienated pleasure will be decided spontaneously.
And whether the next solo concert planned in Moscow in June will actually take place is even more difficult to predict at the moment. At the moment everything is different.
