Niklas Lukassen grew up in an inconspicuous village in the Black Forest, but early on he embarked on a special musical journey that led him to a life full of stimulating places and opportunities. New York played a fundamental role in Niklas‘ musical development. There, he completed his master’s degree with a full scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music under his mentor Ron Carter. As a doctoral student at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he is now researching ways to expand the spectrum of bass playing between acoustic and electronic music.
With natural, playful authority and an emphatic enthusiasm for experimentation, Niklas Lukassen is at home in several musical worlds. This has given him the opportunity to accompany performances by Kurt Rosenwinkel, Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, Jorge Rossy, Oz Noy, Will Vinson, Jo Lawry, Valerie Simpson, and Norma Winston, among others. He was also a singer with the German National Youth Jazz Orchestra. His musical encounters have taken Niklas on tours throughout the US, the UK, China, Asia, North Africa, and large parts of Europe. These include iconic venues such as Lincoln Center, the Beacon Theatre, the John F. Kennedy Center, and the Berlin Philharmonic.
As a bandleader, he creates contrasting soundscapes with his other projects in addition to his international quartet with Ben van Gelder, Kit Downes, and Francesco Ciniglio. In his trio, together with Pat Metheny’s former pianist, Gwilym Simcock, and drummer James Maddren, he breaks new musical ground on a new, innovative hybrid instrument, the bass cello. Furthermore, with his strikingly orchestrated band ECHO, he creates soundscapes in text and tone with songwriter poetry and lively improvisation.
