The martial band name is a little misleading: the quartet PHALANX does not sound like a closed front, but is an open system. The defining coordinates are jazz and something akin to avant-garde metal, which is difficult to define. Within these coordinates, anything can happen, and when the band talks about “25 ideas” per composition, that is still a modest estimate.
After the Burghausen International Jazz Week, the Herzberg Festival, many other concerts, and a new bassist, the young Cologne-based Xaver Feest, PHALANX is now ready to record its second album. With songs that have already been tried and tested live as well as completely unheard pieces, the recording session will start with the live recording and then be completed in the studio over the following two days....
