The RMS Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Martin Reuthner, is finally returning to the LOFT after a long absence and has invited Ludwig Nuss to join them for the occasion. Performing on stage with this trombone star is a dream come true for any jazz ensemble, as the lead and solo trombonist of the WDR Big Band is one of the most sought-after guest soloists on the European big band scene. The RMS Jazz Orchestra has now fulfilled this dream and will present a cross-section of international big band literature together with Ludwig Nuss. A good portion of the arrangements were penned by Dave Horler, who wrote the music specifically for his long-time WDR colleague.
Ludwig Nuss studied in Cologne with Prof. Jiggs Whigham, initially worked as a freelancer in Cologne, and was a member of the SDR Big Band in Stuttgart. In addition to his work as lead trombonist and jazz soloist in the WDR Big Band, Nuss is active in many areas of the German and European jazz scene. He gives concerts with Michael Abene in a trio with John Goldsby and Benyamin Nuss, as well as with various quartet and quintet ensembles with Ingolf Burkhardt, Peter Weniger, and Hubert Nuss. In addition to his work as a band musician, he is committed to promoting young talent. Between 2007 and 2012, he was professor of jazz trombone at the Jazz Institute Berlin.
The RMS Jazz Orchestra, founded in 1970, is the jazz flagship of the Rheinische Musikschule der Stadt Köln (RMS). The band rivals professional ensembles in terms of sound and energy, but is also considered an important talent factory and has been a training ground for many well-known musicians on the German jazz scene. Young talents from the band regularly find their way to music colleges, so it is no surprise that the RMS Jazz Orchestra repeatedly shares the stage with stars of the scene, who are only too happy to accept invitations to make music together. An excerpt from the guest list reads like a “who’s who” of big band jazz and also expresses the close connection between the WDR Big Band and the RMS Jazz Orchestra: Andy Haderer, Paul Heller, Dave Horler, Heiner Wiberny, Julia Zipprick, Hanno Busch, Claus Fischer, Bruno Müller, Rüdiger Baldauf, Alex Vesper, Karolina Strassmayer …
Singer Emma Ross will add a special touch, bringing not only her wonderful voice to the stage but also her skills in composition and arrangement.
Emma Ross was a scholarship holder of the WDR Composers Fellowship Program for two years and has already performed her pieces from that time with the Frankfurt Traumfabrik Jazz Orchestra and the WDR Big Band. But the young singer not only has a heart for big band music, she has also been playing in a duo with Cologne-based bassist Gabriel Spindler for a year, with whom she won the WildCardContest in Wuppertal and performed at the Jazzmeeting Wuppertal.
