On the two evenings in December, Tête-à-Tête will feature two very different musical re-encounters with two saxophonists in a class of their own – Frank Gratkowski (on Monday, December 9th) and Michaël Attias (on Tuesday, December 10th).

The two duos have released new CDs and will be presenting their music as part of the two-day mini-festival.

The German saxophonist Frank Gratkowski and the Russian-born pianist Simon Nabatov have been making music together for over 30 years in a wide variety of constellations and contexts. Their fruitful collaboration began in Klaus König’s large ensemble projects. Later, the two played in Nabatov’s settings of Russian literary works as well as in numerous ad hoc constellations.
However, playing as a duo always allowed them to get to the core of what is essential in improvised music – the open dialog, the joy of surprising oneself and the other, the coherent storytelling alongside abstract musical entanglements.
The duo has documented their elegant yet powerful style on two CD releases to date. Tender Mercies is their third and most mature and expressive album to date, recorded at the LOFT in Cologne and released in 2023 on the Portuguese label Clean Feed.
