Refractio Vol. II: Debussy is the new musical project by Cologne-based pianist Magí Garcías and Diego Hervalejo, a jazz pianist residing in Barcelona.
In this second volume of their Refractio project, they explore the boundary between performance and improvisation, creating a dialogue between these two musical worlds.
This new work is dedicated to the sonic legacy of Claude Debussy, delving into his harmonic alchemy, musical logic, and gestures to create a unique universe.
The recording is a monumental journey that features collaborations with renowned artists such as Rita Payés, Anggie Obin, Zuzanna Sosnowska, and Lluís Naval. Intermezzi are intrudoced for the first time: free improvisations on piano and Rhodes, recorded almost spontaneously by Hervalejo and Garcías. The natural sound of the Rhodes’ tines enhances the texture, evoking aquatic sounds.
Magí Garcías is a versatile pianist from Palma (Mallorca), who has performed in Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Austria, and Poland. He has released three albums, blending chamber music, improvisation, and composition. He has won several international awards, including 1st prize at the Steinway Förderpreis in Nürnberg and 2nd prize at the Concurs Internacional de les Corts in Barcelona.
In 2017, he formed the Sosnowska-Garcías Duo with cellist Zuzanna Sosnowska, which has won prizes at the Salieri-Zinetti International Competition (2019) and Swedish Duo Competition (2022), and performed at festivals across Europe.
Garcías has collaborated with artists such as Dudu Carmel and José Manuel Montero. He studied in Spain and Germany, earning his „Meisterklasse“ with distinction from the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg under Pr. Dr. Aurelia Visovan. Influential masterclasses include those with Claudio Martínez Mehner and Natalia Trull.
He has performed with orchestras like the Bad Reichenhaller Philharmoniker and Orquesta Sinfónica de Ibiza, under conductors such as Guido Rumstadt and Francisco Valero-Terribas. His concerts have taken him to major cities including Madrid, Paris, and Warsaw, with broadcasts on BR-Klassik, Catalunya Ràdio, and RTVE.
In contemporary music, he has toured with John Cage’s Sonatas for Prepared Piano and premiered works by Alireza Khiabani and Mariona Vila. He has recorded five albums, including Refractio VOL. II: Debussy, praised for its innovation, and Nuredduna, based on Costa i Llobera’s poetry.
Since 2020, Garcías has been an associate professor at the Conservatorio Superior de las Islas Baleares and has collaborated with international masterclasses. He has also worked as a pianist at the SommerAkademie of the Pre-College in Cologne, organized by the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
