TWO2 (1989) – John Cage

This is one of the few „number“ pieces by Cage that does not use time brackets and in which no time indications are noted. Inspired by a remark by Sofia Gubaidulina, namely; „There is an inner clock„, Cage created a composition consisting of 36 musical lines or sections, which Cage refers to as rengas. A renga is an ancient Japanese poetic form, each of which has a five-part structure, to which Cage refers in this composition. The sounds are divided between the two piano parts, the interpretation is left to the two pianists, who decide at the moment at what tempo the rengas should be interpreted....

John Cage’s Two2 allows the listener to travel into the vastness of the sounds, pausing again to listen as they disappear. A play with memory and repetition, without giving any direction. Each sound seems to have its own center. You immerse yourself in it without knowing your destination, there is no written direction and there is no time, only the individual sounds of the 36 rengas.

Silence, space and time form a central aspect of the works created. In Two2, all dynamic energies appear reduced to a minimum over an almost infinite space of over an hour. Again and again, the sounds linger in a certain silence, only to quietly develop again.
Listeners are led into an expanse of sound on the concert evening, where they can listen to the emergence and disappearance of the sounds – in an expanse of silence – and perhaps get an idea of what eternity could be.

Marlies Debacker and Judith Wegmann decided to pursue this unique encounter after a joint duo concert at the LOFT (2019). They play both composed and improvised music.
