This has changed in the meantime, which has increased the fun even more. You can hear it on this new album how this trio has moved closer together and increased their joy of playing. Immediately after the first recordings they tried out new pieces, tested ideas and continued as if in a flowing transition. After the play was before the play … Josef is now studying in Basel, Henri has moved to Leipzig to continue his studies at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Academy of Theater and Music, where Vincent’s teacher in the piano major is now Frank Chastenier. Vincent calls his two mentors, Wollny and Chastenier, „a supercombi.“
The band has developed its interplay, now approaches the pieces more freely. Through more open passages, the sound has changed. They act more emotionally and love more complex forms in which they play with structures and continue ideas they share. This has created a compact band sound, which they can run flexibly and condense into song-like pieces. Energy and force are there, but also contemplation and pause. Everything is possible now. Variable, lively and tightly interlocked this progresses, whereby they have sharpened the focus for this album for song-like melodic songs.
Wille is the name of the album that beads through in a driving flow, whose inner logic captivates with an inner cohesion that transports authenticity in a mobile, fresh and agile way. These three know exactly that they can achieve a lot with each other, whereby a high sympathy bonus accompanies them and spurs on their sovereignty. The goal is a striking catchiness beyond the banal.
Vincent defines the title-giving will as the „development of mental ideas, which one transfers into reality through action“, or as a „conscious decision for an action“. There is simply the will to play and to find expression, to express oneself through artistic work. This drive gives the recording its urgency and persuasiveness.
From a grown fund the trio has chosen a conceptual framework defined by a closeness to pop music. That is why cover versions were recorded for the first time. Just listen and be amazed at how subtly the three of them take on I Wanna Dance With Somebody by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, the Beatles song In My Life, or the catchy song Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John. In Things, they take Louis Cole at his word: Things don’t work out the way you think they will, either it goes well or it goes badly, the only certainty you have is that things never work out the way you suspect. Nothing about these adaptations seems contrived next to the compositions of Vincent Meissner, who did not record the covers as commercial enhancers, but because the artistic or musical exploration of external material manifests the band’s own sound all the more strongly.
This corresponds to the honesty with which this trio convinces. Offensively, they want to present their art and position themselves. „It’s nice to hear someone listen,“ Vincent Meissner states after the live experiences of the last few months. He understands his pieces as a framework to be filled in, as a space to be walked through together. The point is that the listener can confront himself or herself in this space. This is a communicative process that also involves the defense of art and the offers it can and must make. It is about conveying impressions of the present beyond words, it is about transporting emotional experiences that point beyond the concrete moment with great matter-of-factness. The new chapter of the Vincent Meissner Trio is a consistent next step that already makes you want more. This band is on its way.
