Azar Lawrence presents George Kahn Quintet
GEORGE KAHN
George Kahn grew up in New Rochelle, New York, studying classical music from the age of nine. He began composing while in high school and was always interested in improvisational music, studying the music of Charles Ives, John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen as a Composition Major at Brandeis University. He did not start to explore jazz until his last years at Brandeis, being particularly affected by John Coltrane's Kulu Se Mama, which opened his mind towards what was possible in music. After graduating, he lived on Cape Cod for a couple of years, did some gigs in Boston, toured the East Coast with a disco band and eventually moved to California in 1976.
A major force in the Los Angeles jazz community since the late 1990s, pianist-composer George Kahn recently released his sixth CD, Cover Up! Made available through his Playing Records label, Cover Up! features Kahn's trio with bassist Brian Bromberg and drummer Alex Acuna, plus occasional guests. The brilliant lineup of players interprets four catchy originals as well as some surprising , recognizable rock tunes that are transformed into jazz.
AZAR LAWRENCE
One of the most powerful and distinctive of all post' Coltrane tenorists, Azar Lawrence has been a sometimes quiet force in music for over three decades. Born in 1952 in Los Angeles by the age of 21 he had worked with Ike & Tina Turner, War, and Charles Wright's Watts 103rd Street Band ('Express Yourself'). At an early age, Azar Lawrence left his mark on Jazz. Hired by drummer Elvin Jones when he was just 19, the prodigious young saxophonist would be tapped soon after by McCoy Tyner to fill the large shoes of collaborator John Coltrane.
Throughout the '70's, Lawrence recorded with Tyner, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. Like his contemporaries Herbie Hancock and Charles Lloyd, Lawrence forayed into pop music, recording with Earth Wind & Fire, Frank Zappa and Marvin Gaye. Since the early 2000's, the consummate artist has returned full force to his post-Bob Jazz roots. His latest production Azar Lawrence - The Seeker was recorded live at the Jazz Standard, New York, NY. The Seeker made it to Grammy nomination consideration; and next up!; Azar Lawrence's soon to be released new CD; Elementals promises to be another 'red hot' presentation submitted by the ever burning! saxist guru'..
