Bill Saxton is a native New Yorker, born and raised in Harlem. Bill pursued a degree in music at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated into a world of jazz icons whose support would shape his professional attitude and musicianship for years to come. Clark Terry and Frank Foster were his mentors, who would serve as his core idols and friends, throughout his career. For over 30 years, Bill has performed with the top names in the business at home and abroad.
He has appeared with and/or recorded with jazz giants, such as Roy Haynes, Jackie McLean, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Count Basie Orchestra, Frank Foster, Carmen McRae, Mongo Santa Maria, Roy Ayers, Barry Harris, Tito Puente, and he performed on With Love, the Charles Tolliver Grammy nominated album, to name a few.
Bill rejuvenated a historical jazz landmark when he and his wife; Author, Dr. Theda Saxon opened the speak easy “Bill’s Place” in 2004. In 1927 during prohibition, the famous Swing Street, 133rd Street between Lenox and Seventh Avenues, was the after hours hangout for Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Moms Mabley, Langston Hughes, and the like. The popular joint at 148 West 133rd, was also home to pianist Willie the Lion Smith.
In 1933 the little known teenage girl, Billie Holiday was discovered there by John Hammond. The novel "Heirs To Dirty Linen and Harlem Ghosts" by Dr. Theda Saxton chronicles the Harlem Swing Street jazz era. Dr. Saxton will be the curator at a stellar Billie Holiday Centennial Birthday Celebration (at Bill’s Place) planned for April 7, 2015.
