One of the most important representatives of Latin jazz in the world of drumming, Calixto Oviedo, a
teacher, writer and performer, is a living encyclopedia of Cuban drumming and percussion, from the profound roots of African-influenced folklore to the hottest dance music and the cutting edge of jazz.
His love of percussion was inborn in him since birth, but living poorly in his native Cuba, his family was unable to buy the instrument he dreamed of playing, which costed 55 pesos. One morning, at the age of 5 years, walking with his dad, they found a 50 peso bill and his unfulfilled dream became a reality.
His dad's job, at the Hotel Nacional, also become an important part of his musical upbringing since there
he was able to meet Rubén González, later on the celebrated pianist of Buena Vista Social Club.
Rubén González wrote a letter in his behalf to Gonzalo Roig, the Director de la Orquesta Nacional de Conciertos, an after a measured test, he was accepted to study the only instrument he was born to play...and the rest is history!
After graduating from the National High School of the Arts, he played with many different bands, The
Radio & Television Orchestra, and Grupo Achére. Later, he joined the band of the Cuban bolero
singer Pacho Alonso, and in the early 80's, became the very first drummer in Arturo Sandoval band
after he left Irakere.
In 1983, he founded the Adalberto Alvarez y Su Son with his old school mate, Adalberto Alvarez,
where he played timbales until the beginning of 1991, where he would join N.G. La Banda, considered by many to be the creators of a new Cuban sound, the "Timba". This band was best known for placing emphasis on tight rhythms and an aggressive brass section, nicknamed the Terror Brass, with Calixto's drums and timbales at the forefront. He was their drummer during the period that produced many of their greatest hits; Santa Palabra, Échale Limón, and El Trágico.
In the mid-90's, he relocated to Stockholm, Sweden, where he toured practically all over the world with
some of the universe best jazz and Latin rhythm musicians until he decided to make the US his home
base. Now, he performs with his own jazz ensemble, The Cuban Jazz Train, teaches clinics at major United States Universities and is an accredited percussion professor at California State University at Los Angeles (CSULA).
In 1979, at the first Festival of Music of the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists, he was presented the trophy as "The Best Drummer in Cuba".
