In addition to numerous awards, in 2013, the Modern Music Society Big Band placed 7th out of 55 bands in the renowned Yamano Big Band Jazz Competition for college big bands in Japan. They perform a wide range of music from classic to modern jazz, including works from: Count Basie, Woody Herman, Thad Jones, Buddy Rich, Phil Woods, John La Barbera, and more.

The CSULB Big Band has achieved local, national, and international recognition through numerous appearances at jazz festivals, educational conventions, and Command Performances.
