Angie Wells grew up in Philadelphia in a home filled with great music. Her mother sang Gospel and played piano for the church choir. Her father was a devoted jazz and blues fan.

When she and her mother returned home from church on Sundays their home was filled with the sound of jazz and blues greats from her father’s vinyl record collection. Wells’ love of jazz and blues began at a very early age on those Sunday afternoons.

The path to singing jazz has not been a straight one for Wells. However, one night in Paris redirected her journey forever. She joined a trio playing at a small jazz supper club for a couple numbers. The audience’s explosive applause and cheering became a catalyst. Wells returned to the states and began to pursue singing jazz professionally. She studied theory and technique with local vocal coaches, called on local jazz musicians for mentorship and advice, attended pro jam sessions and recorded a demo....

Angie sent out her demo and began to book gigs. She earned a semifinalist position in the first Annual Indaba Music Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and won the new talent competition at the final Sweet n’ Hot Jazz Festival in Los Angeles. She has played and recorded with some of the best jazz musicians in the country including John Belzaguy, Carl Burnett, Bill Cunliffe, Quentin Dennard, Kenny Elliott, Henry Franklin, Sam Hirsh, Jim Hughart, Joe LaBarbera, Edwin Livingston, Harry Kim, Paul Kreibich, James Leary, Jack Lecompte, Trevor Ware, Tom Warrington and Doug Webb. Wells has also performed as a guest vocalist with Jeff Goldblum and The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra and with New Orleans’ own Kermit Ruffins and The BBQ Swingers at The Telluride Jazz Festival and The San Jose Summer Jazz Fest. She has toured with French pianist/arranger Raphael Lemonnier performing at Festival Jazz du Monsegur, Theatre Christian Liger, The Jazz and Table Jazz Festival and various other club and festival performances in France.

Her CD with Lemonnier titled Love and Mischief was released last year and her original single from the project “She Ain’t The Kinda’ Girl” made it to #4 on the charts for France’s National Jazz Radio. The project also earned several “Top Ten” spots on radio stations here in the states and in Canada. Wells will return to France in June for her fourth tour in France.
