UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance hosts an evening of music and recollections honoring Barbara Dane's inspiring lifetime of artistry and activism. In celebration of her 90th birthday, Dane will be joined by friends, family and special guest artists.

The legendary singer and social activist will perform songs from her new album, 'Throw It Away…,' featuring renowned jazz pianist Tammy Hall, who joins Dane for this performance. And flying in from Havana for the occasion, Dane’s son, Pablo Menéndez, leader of Cuban band Mezcla, and her grandson, Cuban blues and rock star Osamu, round out the ensemble on guitar, vocals and blues harp....

In a historic reunion, the Chambers Brothers will accompany Dane on freedom songs recorded together on the seminal 1966 Folkways album, Barbara Dane and the Chambers Brothers, which will be reissued on vinyl in time for the celebration.

Outspoken and indomitable, Dane continues to sing out with wit, wisdom and swing. Cited as an inspiration by artists such as Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt, her rich history includes collaborations with greats like Louis Armstrong, Benny Carter, Earl “Fatha” Hines, Lightnin’ Hopkins, the Chambers Brothers, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. Taking a cue from early mentor Pete Seeger, Dane has never confined herself to one genre, and, unwilling to make the compromises demanded by the music business, she struck out on her own path, singing for peace and social justice.
